Math Strategies
As we are working with addition and subtraction we want students to understand that there are many strategies they can use to help them solve problems. They should not just rely on mental math, but instead are asked to "prove" their answers by using manipulatives, drawings, objects, or fingers. Even if they are able to fluently add and subtract, or as kindergartners say, "I just know it!", we require them to show us their work through multiple strategies:
Flip the Vowel Sound
In kindergarten, our students learn that vowels are important because they make two sounds and are in almost every word. We even sing songs about these very important letters! Our students also learn about the "Magic Silent E" at the end of words, which causes vowels to "say their name", or their long vowel sound. Here is another strategy to help your child when they are reading to remember the two sounds for each vowel:
How to Help Your Child in Reading
As a teacher, it is my first instinct to NOT tell a child an unknown word as they are reading. However, as a parent it might be your first instinct to tell your child how to read a word instead of watching them struggle. It is important to implement strategies with your child as they are reading so they learn to build their confidence and decode words. This will only strengthen their reading abilities and promote success. Here are some strategies we use at school that you can use while reading with your child at home:
